Ambuja Cements and Leilac Partner on Commercial-Scale Low-Carbon Cement Plant in India

Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has partnered with UK-based clean tech firm Leilac to build what could be the world's largest industrial-scale low-carbon cement plant. The demonstration project at Ambuja's Sanghi facility in Kutch, Gujarat, will test Leilac's carbon capture and hybrid electric heating technology on a 6.6 million tonne per annum line. The technology is designed to eliminate coal use in cement production by switching to renewable electricity for process heat, while also capturing unavoidable CO2 from the chemical reaction. If successful, the project could be scaled up to capture over one million tonnes of CO2 per year, making it a significant test case for decarbonizing cement globally. This partnership supports Ambuja's SBTi-validated net zero target for 2050 and leverages the company's nearly 1 GW of captive green power. The cement industry accounts for roughly 8% of global CO2 emissions, so a commercially viable low-carbon pathway here would have major implications for climate goals and carbon markets.
