Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has partnered with UK-based Leilac to develop a commercial-scale low-carbon cement production facility at its Sanghi plant in Kutch, Gujarat. The project will test Leilac's carbon capture and hybrid electric heating technology, aiming to reduce coal consumption to zero and capture unavoidable process CO2 emissions. If successful, the plant could scale up to capture over one million tonnes of CO2 annually, supporting Ambuja's SBTi-validated net zero target for 2050. The partnership focuses on improving the economics of carbon capture in cement manufacturing, a hard-to-abate sector. Ambuja is also investing in 1 GW of renewable energy and waste heat recovery systems to back its electrification push. This project could provide a replicable model for low-carbon cement production in India and globally, though it is still at the demonstration stage.
