Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has partnered with UK-based Leilac to test carbon capture technology at its Sanghipuram plant in Gujarat. The pilot combines direct separation capture with hybrid electric heating to cut process emissions from cement production, which are hard to abate because they come from the chemical reaction in clinker making, not just fuel. The goal is to reach zero coal use at the facility and eventually capture over 1 million metric tons of CO2 per year if the pilot scales. This project is a concrete step toward Ambuja's net zero by 2050 target. It also shows that major Indian industrial players are now deploying specialized carbon capture for hard to abate sectors. The cement industry is a significant source of global emissions, and this partnership could offer a replicable model for other plants in India and beyond.
