Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has partnered with UK-based clean tech firm Leilac to test low-carbon cement production at its Sanghipuram plant in Gujarat's Kutch district. The pilot will use Leilac's carbon capture and electric heating technology at the 6.6 MTPA Sanghi facility, aiming to reduce coal consumption to zero and flexibly use alternative fuels. The company is also scaling up captive renewable capacity to nearly 1 GW to support decarbonization. If the pilot succeeds, the project could be scaled 7 to 8 times to capture over one million tonnes of CO2 annually, potentially becoming the world's largest industrial-scale carbon capture project for cement. This would provide a replicable model for low-carbon cement production in India and other markets, improving the economics of carbon capture and utilization in a hard-to-abate sector.
