Ambuja Cements and Leilac partner for low-carbon cement plant in Gujarat using carbon capture and renewable energy

Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has partnered with UK-based clean tech firm Leilac to build a commercial-scale low-carbon cement plant at its Sanghipuram facility in Gujarat's Kutch district. The project will test Leilac's carbon capture and electric heating technology, aiming to reduce coal consumption to zero while allowing flexible use of alternative fuels. The company is also scaling up its captive renewable energy capacity to nearly 1 GW to support decarbonization. If the pilot succeeds, the plant could be scaled up seven to eight times, capturing over one million tonnes of CO2 annually. The companies say this would be the world's largest industrial-scale project of its kind, providing a replicable model for low-carbon cement production in India and other markets. The partnership focuses on improving the economics of carbon capture to make large-scale deployment viable.
