The project will test Leilac's carbon capture and hybrid electrification technology to cut emissions and reduce fuel use in cement production. The plant currently produces 6.6 million tonnes per annum, and if successful, the technology could be scaled to capture over one million tonnes of CO2 annually. This initiative supports Ambuja's Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated net-zero goal for 2050. The company is also electrifying cement manufacturing with nearly 1 GW of captive green power. The collaboration aims to improve the economics of carbon capture, making large-scale deployment more viable for the global cement industry.

This is a solid step for cement decarbonization. Leilac's tech uses indirect heating to avoid mixing fuel with raw materials, which makes CO2 capture cheaper. Scaling to 1 Mt CO2 per year would be one of the largest in the industry.

Good point. The hybrid electrification part is interesting. Cement kilns need high heat, so electric heating at that scale is not trivial. I'd like to see the timeline for when they expect the demonstration to complete and what the energy intensity looks like.

Cement is one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize because most emissions come from the chemical process, not just fuel. So carbon capture is almost necessary. But the economics depend on where the captured CO2 goes. If it's just stored, that adds cost. Utilization could help, but that market is still small.
