Amazon matched 100% of its electricity use with renewable energy for the third year in a row in 2025, according to its latest sustainability report. The company now has 712 renewable projects totaling 42 GW of capacity. It also deployed AI tools in 820 facilities to detect leaks and mechanical problems, and built an AI system to identify materials in unsellable items to improve recycling efficiency. Carbon intensity dropped 38% since 2019 even as revenue grew 156%. On the logistics side, Amazon put 52,700 electric delivery vans on the road globally, up from 31,400 in 2024, and added 360 electric heavy goods vehicles for middle mile routes. The company also invested in X-energy to add 5 GW of small modular nuclear reactors to the US grid by 2039. Water use efficiency improved too, with data centers now 75% of the way to a water positive goal by 2030. 42 GW of renewables is impressive but they added more data center capacity than anyone in 2025. The 5 GW nuclear target by 2039 from X-energy is a long timeline. SMRs are not commercial yet. I would like to see the hourly matching data not just annual.

The carbon intensity metric is useful but Amazon's total emissions went up 16% in 2025. That matters for absolute reduction targets. The Climate Pledge is about net zero by 2040. Intensity improvements alone won't get them there if data center buildout keeps accelerating.
