Amazon is now letting Climate Pledge signatories and value chain partners buy into its existing carbon credit offtake agreements. The program covers three projects: ecological restoration in South Africa using spekboom plants, rice methane reduction in India through water management, and direct air capture in Texas via a 1PointFive facility. Buyers need a minimum of 100 credits with no set contract duration. Amazon's head of carbon neutralization said the move helps meet its 2040 net-zero goal, especially for Scope 3 emissions where suppliers must participate. The company previously offered spot purchases of credits but saw slower uptake due to supply issues. Critics note the Climate Pledge does not require the 90% emissions cut that SBTi demands, leaving room for offsets to play a larger role in meeting targets.
