Amazon and Constellation have signed a 20-year power purchase agreement that will fund more than $3 billion in upgrades at Maryland's Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant. The deal supports a 190 MW capacity increase, with the new power expected online between 2030 and 2032. Amazon will purchase 690 MW under the agreement, though the plant's output still goes to the PJM grid rather than directly to Amazon. Calvert Cliffs is Maryland's only nuclear plant and supplies about 80% of the state's clean energy. The investment also supports a 20-year relicensing effort and could enable additional clean energy projects at the site. The deal is part of Amazon's broader push into nuclear power, which includes agreements with Talen Energy and X Energy. It shows how long-term corporate PPAs can keep existing reactors running and pay for incremental capacity without waiting for new plants.
