The jump is driven by record data center capacity additions, with electricity related emissions up 34 percent year on year. Supply chain emissions now account for 76 percent of the total footprint, largely from data center construction and hardware manufacturing on fossil fuel heavy grids in Asia Pacific. Amazon matched 100 percent of its electricity consumption with renewable energy for the third year running, but that figure uses annual global matching rather than hourly or location matched procurement. The company admits 24/7 carbon free energy remains an aspirational goal. Carbon intensity also rose 3 percent, meaning emissions grew faster than revenue. Amazon says demand may slow its progress toward net zero by 2040.

Supply chain emissions now 76 percent of total footprint. That is mostly concrete, steel, and chip fab on dirty grids in Asia Pacific. Amazon can buy all the RECs it wants for its own power, but the embodied carbon in new data centers is a different problem.

1.14 PUE is decent but the absolute energy consumption is not disclosed. That is a meaningful gap. Without MWh numbers you cannot benchmark efficiency gains against capacity growth. Also, 100 percent renewable matching on an annual basis is not the same as matching hourly load.

Supply chain emissions now 76 percent of total. That is the part most people miss. The carbon in concrete, steel, and server manufacturing is huge and harder to offset than operational power. Amazon's net zero by 2040 target looks shaky if this trend continues.

The 100 percent renewable matching claim is doing a lot of work here. Annual matching lets you buy RECs from any grid region and call it clean. Until regulators require hourly matching or location based accounting, these reports will keep masking real grid impact.
