Amazon and Stella McCartney Launch Fashion Coalition to Scale Sustainable Materials and Cut Waste
esgnews.earthAmazon, Stella McCartney, Canopy, and the World Economic Forum have launched The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition, a group of over 60 fashion brands, manufacturers, and innovators working to accelerate climate action in the industry. The coalition aims to tackle the fashion sector's significant environmental footprint, which includes an estimated 2-8% of global carbon emissions and over 92 million tons of textile waste annually. By focusing on recycled fibers, next-generation waste feedstocks, and lower-impact manufacturing, the initiative seeks to overcome the cost and supply chain barriers that have kept sustainable materials from scaling. The coalition plans to use blended financing models, aggregating multi-year demand to help material innovators reach competitive pricing, and has developed a Fashion Coalition Lever Library with over 100 vetted interventions. Early signatories include brands like Brooks Running, Selfridges, and Vestiaire Collective, as well as material innovators like Bananatex and Circ. The goal is to turn sustainable fashion from a premium niche into the market standard, using real-world data to inform policy and drive industry-wide adoption.
