Amazon's head of sustainability, Cara Hurst, says the company does not yet know all the solutions needed to reach net-zero emissions by 2040. She reaffirmed Amazon's commitment to The Climate Pledge but stressed that achieving this goal requires collaboration with governments and suppliers across aviation, AI, agriculture, and construction. Amazon claims to be one of the world's largest buyers of clean energy with a 42 GW portfolio, though its carbon intensity rose in 2025 compared to 2024, remaining below 2022 levels. However, TechCrunch also reported that Amazon is planning a 7.65 GW natural gas power plant for an AI data center campus. If built, its 35 turbines could emit up to 33 million tonnes of CO2 per year, potentially making it the largest single source of emissions in the U.S. This tension between clean energy leadership and a massive fossil fuel project raises questions about how Amazon's net-zero target will actually be met, and whether its current accounting fully captures the impact of its AI infrastructure expansion.
