Amazon has expanded its carbon-inset program to cover aviation by offering sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) certificates through its Sustainability Exchange platform. Suppliers, business customers, and Climate Pledge signatories can buy certificates tied to verified SAF volumes, even when the fuel itself is not delivered to their own flights. Amazon says its purchasing scale helps secure lower SAF prices and passes those savings to eligible buyers. SAF still accounts for less than 1% of jet fuel supply and costs two to five times more than conventional fuel, according to Amazon's Kyle Kornack. The certificate model separates the environmental benefit from physical delivery, which lets companies support lower-carbon aviation without needing SAF at their specific airports. That structure makes it an inset rather than a traditional offset, and the key question will be how Amazon verifies the certificates and avoids double counting. For companies looking to address corporate travel and air freight emissions, the move gives them a direct channel to buy SAF-linked credits through an existing marketplace. It also signals that large buyers can use procurement volume to make cleaner fuel options more accessible across their value chains.
