Amanora Township in Pune has become the first township in Maharashtra to install four AlgaeTree units, a microalgae-based technology that captures carbon dioxide and filters particulate matter. Each unit can absorb up to 1.5 tonnes of CO2 per year, using photosynthesis and solar-assisted operation to improve air quality in dense urban areas. The system complements existing greenery by drawing in ambient air, filtering PM2.5 and PM10 particles, and directing CO2 into a cultivation chamber where microalgae release oxygen. The technology has been validated by academic institutions and carbon credit firms, and the township plans to expand to 40 units in coming months. This deployment reflects growing interest in tech-led environmental solutions for urban sustainability, offering a scalable alternative for carbon capture where traditional tree planting is not feasible. The project also highlights potential for integrating such units into residential townships, corporate campuses, and smart city infrastructure.
