Altilium is establishing a commercial refinery in Plymouth to recover critical minerals from end-of-life EV batteries. The facility aims to reduce reliance on overseas processing, specifically from China, and lower the carbon footprint of battery materials by up to 74% compared to mined sources. This project supports the UK's goal of onshoring the automotive supply chain and feeding domestic gigafactories. By processing black mass locally, the company seeks to capture economic value and reduce the embedded carbon in new electric vehicles.
