Allianz UK expands battery storage underwriting as UK grid capacity targets rise
insurancebusinessmag.comAllianz UK has expanded its underwriting for battery energy storage systems (BESS), offering brokers specialist support as demand for grid-scale battery projects grows. The UK currently has about 10 GW of grid battery capacity, with government targets aiming for 24-27 GW by 2030. The new proposition targets mid-market energy clients and can be tailored to complex project risks, including fire mitigation for thermal runaway. Fire risk remains the main underwriting challenge, with insurers requiring evidence of deluge systems, battery management monitoring, and emergency planning. The expansion is part of Allianz's wider renewable energy strategy, covering wind, solar, hydro, biomass, and anaerobic digestion. Faster NSIP consenting under the Planning and Infrastructure Act 2025 is expected to bring more large-scale BESS projects to market, increasing the need for technical underwriting depth.
