Alliant 720 MW gas plant would erase Linn County's decade of emissions cuts, county panel says
thegazette.comLinn County's sustainability committee says Alliant Energy's proposed 720 MW Morgan Valley Energy Center would undo the county's emissions progress since 2010. The committee's latest inventory found Linn County cut CO2 emissions 18% from 2010 levels, mostly by moving from coal to gas and adding wind and solar. It estimates the new gas plant would raise 2023 emissions by 24%, turning the county's 45% reduction goal into a 47% target just to offset the plant's output. Alliant says the plant is needed to meet growing demand. Opponents cite health and quality of life concerns. The Board of Supervisors discussed a host community agreement that would pay the county $5.3 million during construction and $50,000 per year for 30 years, but took no action. The agreement is on the board's agenda for Wednesday.
