Algoma Steel released its 2025 Sustainability Report detailing the shift from blast furnaces to electric arc furnaces (EAFs) at its Sault Ste. Marie facility. The first EAF came online in July 2025, and the company shut down Blast Furnace No. 7 and cokemaking operations in January 2026. Once the second EAF starts up in 2026, Algoma expects a roughly 70% reduction in carbon emissions intensity, positioning it as a lower-carbon steel supplier for North American markets. This is Canada's largest industrial decarbonization project to date. The report follows SASB and TCFD disclosure frameworks. The company acknowledges a challenging trade environment but emphasizes that the EAF transition is central to long-term value creation.
