Algeria's Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, met with a delegation from China Baowu, the world's largest steelmaker, to explore building an integrated low-carbon direct-reduced iron and green steel complex. The proposed facility would combine Algeria's natural gas resources, renewable energy, and carbon capture technologies to reduce emissions from steel production. Sonatrach would support the project with energy supplies and raw materials, while China Baowu brings its expertise in green steelmaking. This move aligns with Algeria's strategy to diversify its economy, increase local value addition, and meet tightening international standards for industrial decarbonization. The talks also covered technology transfer and expanding local content. If realized, the project could position Algeria as a regional hub for lower-carbon steel, leveraging its gas infrastructure and proximity to European markets.
