So Alberta is pushing another pipeline to the coast right after Carney and Eby made a deal. One million barrels a day is a lot of locked in emissions. Curious how this squares with any carbon budget.

It doesn't square. Canada's carbon budget is already tight. Adding another million barrels per day of bitumen export capacity means either offsets or a lot of pain elsewhere.

The route follows the existing TMX corridor so some land use battles are avoided. But the emissions from producing and burning that bitumen are the real story. No carbon capture mentioned in the pitch.

Carney's major projects office is supposed to fast track low carbon infrastructure. A bitumen pipeline is the opposite. The political trade here is clear: tanker ban on the north coast in exchange for no court fight on this line. Policy inconsistency at its finest.

One million barrels a day. That is a massive bet on continued oil demand. Meanwhile the same government talks about net zero by 2050. The math does not work unless they assume massive carbon capture that does not exist at scale yet.
