Alberta natural hydrogen study: exceptional potential for low-carbon energy from geology and existing infrastructure

The research highlights Alberta's geology, existing oil and gas wells, and skilled workforce as key advantages for developing this emerging resource. Natural hydrogen, also called gold or white hydrogen, could complement other low-carbon hydrogen production methods like blue and green hydrogen. The study is an early step toward evaluating how to extract, store, and transport natural hydrogen at scale. Repurposing existing wells and infrastructure could lower costs. While global hydrogen demand reached 100 million tonnes in 2025, natural hydrogen is still in very early commercial stages, with only one active production site in Mali. The IEA projects demand could reach 585 million tonnes by 2050, making any credible low-emission hydrogen pathway worth exploring. For Alberta, the opportunity lies in combining its geology with decades of energy industry experience. Researchers say more work is needed on extraction methods, storage, and potential export, but the province is well positioned to lead in this space. The study aims to de-risk exploration for companies and could open a new chapter in low-carbon energy development.
