Alberta First Nation sues Ottawa over Pacific Link pipeline fast track, citing inadequate consultation on CCS
todayville.comCold Lake First Nations has filed a judicial review in Federal Court over Ottawa's decision to designate the Pacific Link oil pipeline as a project of national interest. The Nation says the federal government did not properly consult it before fast tracking the project, and it wants the designation set aside. The legal challenge also covers the linked Pathways carbon capture and storage hub, which would store CO2 from oil sands operations in the Cold Lake area. Ottawa says it consulted more than 130 Indigenous communities and has offered at least 10 per cent ownership in Pacific Link to Indigenous groups. The federal government plans to complete regulatory conditions by September 2027. The court case adds uncertainty to that timeline, though the national interest designation stays in place unless the court orders otherwise.
