Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney have agreed to a memorandum of understanding regarding industrial carbon pricing, pushing the target for a 130 dollar per tonne price back to 2040. This agreement paves the way for a new pipeline to the West Coast, contingent on the progress of Pathways carbon capture projects. Officials are currently evaluating five potential pipeline routes, including options that follow the Trans Mountain Expansion or a northern route to reach Asian markets faster. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in September 2027, though final routing and carbon capture timelines remain under negotiation.
