The Canadian federal government and Alberta have signed a new carbon pricing deal to align emissions costs. As part of the deal, Alberta will submit a proposal for a new oil sands pipeline to the B.C. coast by July 1. Construction for the project could potentially begin in September 2027, supported by federal Indigenous loan guarantees.

The 130 dollar per tonne target by 2040 gives the market a concrete price signal. The real question is how they handle the transition from the previous MOU to this signed deal without creating double taxation or loopholes for heavy emitters.
Price signals are fine, but a new pipeline by 2027 is a tight window for permitting and construction. I want to see the actual capacity specs and whether this includes any carbon capture infrastructure to justify the federal backing.
Seems like a trade off. Ottawa gets a carbon price trajectory that actually moves toward net zero, and Alberta gets a path for a new pipeline. It is a pragmatic deal, but the environmental impact of the new pipeline likely offsets some of the pricing gains.
If the carbon price hits 130, the payback period for industrial heat pumps and efficiency retrofits in Alberta drops significantly. That is where the actual decarbonization happens, not just in the pipeline routing.
