Albania's environment ministry has presented amendments to the country's environmental protection law. The bill would set up the institutional framework for the EU Nature Restoration Regulation 2024/1991, including ecosystem data exchange, mapping, and a national nature restoration plan. It would also create a legal basis for voluntary certification of carbon removal, carbon storage, and emissions reductions, with the goal of attracting private investment into measurable environmental projects. The amendments would also make the National Environment Fund operational. That fund was first designed in 2011 but never activated. Under the new plan, it would support environmental projects through grants and other financial instruments. Minister Sofjan Jaupaj said the changes align Albania with EU standards and do not impose immediate obligations on citizens or businesses. The bill now moves to Albania's Assembly for debate.
