Alaska Energy Metals Corporation is developing the Nikolai project, one of North America's largest undeveloped nickel resources. The site contains billions of pounds of nickel, cobalt, and platinum group metals essential for electric vehicle battery production. With a resource that allows for open-pit mining and a growing indicated resource base, the project aims to secure a domestic supply of critical minerals for the clean energy transition.

The resource size is impressive but the location is the real question. What is the plan for transporting ore out of the Alaskan interior? Infrastructure costs in that region can kill a project even if the grades are decent.
That is where the Inflation Reduction Act comes in. Domestic sourcing requirements for EV tax credits make North American nickel much more attractive to OEMs, which might justify the higher capex for Alaskan infrastructure.
Basically a play on the critical minerals supply chain. They have a massive amount of nickel and cobalt in the ground, and they are trying to move from exploration to actual value creation.
Open pit is definitely the way to go for cost control here. If they can keep the strip ratio low and hit that high grade core early, the payback period looks a lot more realistic.
