AkzoNobel has cut its Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 50 percent from a 2018 baseline, reaching its 2030 target four years early. The company now runs 92 manufacturing sites on 100 percent renewable electricity, covering North America, Latin America, Europe, South Africa, and Vietnam. A 1.7 million euro investment at its Pilawa, Poland facility replaced gas boilers with heat pumps and added 3,551 solar panels, the largest solar array the company has in Europe. The company is also working on a 50 percent reduction in Scope 3 value chain emissions by 2030. It recently launched the Eco+ Cure energy calculator for its Interpon powder coatings brand, which helps customers analyze gas usage, oven temperature, and throughput to cut energy use and operating costs. AkzoNobel's broader goal is carbon neutrality by 2050.

Nice to see a coatings company actually delivering on the numbers. Scope 1 and 2 is the easier half though. Their Scope 3 target of 50% by 2030 is where the real test is. The Eco+ Cure calculator for customers is a smart move to help with that.

92 sites on 100% renewable electricity is solid. But I wonder how much of that is from PPAs versus on-site generation. The Pilawa plant has 3,551 panels but that is one site. For the rest, grid renewable certificates can be cheap and don't always add new capacity.

Hitting the 2030 Scope 1 and 2 target early is good optics. But the real policy question is whether these reductions are from operational changes or just buying RECs. The Pilawa heat pump and solar investment is a concrete example. Would like to see a breakdown of how much came from efficiency versus offsets.

The Pilawa plant retrofit is the kind of detail I like. Gas boilers swapped for heat pumps plus on-site solar. That is a real industrial heat decarbonization project. 1.7 million euros for a single site is not trivial. Would be useful to know the payback period and whether they are using the heat pumps for process heat or just space heating.

AkzoNobel hitting 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 four years early is a good data point for industrial decarbonization. The 92 sites on renewable electricity is the bulk of it. Scope 3 is the harder part and they are only talking about ambition there. The Eco+ Cure calculator is a practical tool but needs adoption to matter.
