AkzoNobel announced it has cut its Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 50% from a 2018 baseline, reaching its 2030 target four years ahead of schedule. The paints and coatings company now runs on 100% renewable electricity in North America, Latin America, and Europe, covering 69% of its manufacturing sites. A key project was a $1.9 million investment at its Pilawa site in Poland, where gas boilers were replaced with heat pumps and a 3,551 panel solar array was installed in 2024. The company still faces a bigger challenge: halving emissions across its full value chain by 2030. That Scope 3 target requires working with suppliers and customers to cut emissions beyond its own operations. AkzoNobel says it is making progress but acknowledges the value chain goal is harder to reach than the operational one it just hit early.

Good to see a coatings company actually hitting a target early. Most corporate climate pledges are vague. AkzoNobel put money into heat pumps and solar at a specific site. That is more concrete than most.

The Pilawa heat pump swap is interesting. $1.9 million to replace gas boilers. Would like to know the payback period and if the heat pumps are actually running at design COP in a Polish winter. Also curious if the renewable electricity claim includes RECs or direct PPAs.

Scope 1 and 2 done early. Scope 3 is the hard part. AkzoNobel admits it is proving more of a challenge. That is where the real emissions are for a coatings company. Raw materials and customer use of their products will be tough to decarbonize.

Hitting operational targets early is good but the article does not say if the 50% cut is absolute or intensity based. If it is intensity, production changes could skew the number. Also, 100% renewable electricity claims need verification on whether they use unbundled RECs or direct procurement.
