AkzoNobel announced it has reduced Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 50% compared to a 2018 baseline, reaching its 2030 target four years ahead of schedule. The paints and coatings company now runs 69% of its manufacturing sites on 100% renewable electricity across three continents. Key moves include replacing gas boilers with heat pumps at its Pilawa site in Poland and installing 3,551 solar panels there. The company is also working on halving Scope 3 value chain emissions by 2030, which it says is a bigger challenge. It launched an energy calculator tool under its Interpon powder coatings brand to help customers cut energy use and emissions. AkzoNobel's long term goal is carbon neutrality by 2050.

Scope 1 and 2 is the low hanging fruit. The fact they hit it early is good but not surprising. Scope 3 is where the actual supply chain emissions live. Would be interested to see if they have a concrete plan for that or just vague targets.

The heat pump retrofit at Pilawa is a solid move. Replacing gas boilers with heat pumps in an industrial setting is not trivial. Would like to know the COP they are getting and whether the grid there can handle the extra load during winter peaks.

SBTi validation gives this some credibility. But Scope 3 is the real puzzle. AkzoNobel's value chain includes chemical feedstocks and customer energy use. Cutting that by 50% will require more than a calculator tool. Curious if they are pushing suppliers for actual reductions or just reporting.
