AkzoNobel, a major paints and coatings manufacturer, has cut its Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions by 50% from 2018 levels, hitting a 2030 target four years early. The company used heat pumps, solar panels, and a switch to 100% renewable electricity across 69% of its manufacturing sites to get there. The milestone was validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. The company now runs on fully renewable electricity across North America, Latin America, and Europe, covering 92 locations. A key project was a 1.7 million euro investment at its Pilawa, Poland site, replacing gas boilers with heat pumps and installing 3,551 solar panels. AkzoNobel still faces the harder task of halving Scope 3 emissions by 2030 and is working with suppliers and customers on tools like the Eco+ Cure energy calculator for powder coatings.

Scope 1 and 2 cut by 50% four years early is a solid result. The Pilawa site with heat pumps and 3,551 panels is a concrete example. Would like to see the Scope 3 plan though, that is the harder part.

Heat pumps replacing gas boilers at a coatings plant is interesting. Would like to know the COP they are getting and whether the site has backup for winter. The 3,551 panels are a decent sized array for a factory.

The SBTi validation adds credibility. But Scope 3 is where most industrial emissions sit. AkzoNobel needs to show how they plan to cut upstream supply chain emissions, not just own operations. The Eco+ Cure calculator is a small step.

Heat pumps in a Polish factory replacing gas boilers is a good retrofit case. 1.7 million euros for that switch plus 3,551 panels. Would be useful to see the payback period and whether they used any subsidies.
