Airlines launch alliance to boost CORSIA carbon credit supply ahead of 2027 compliance deadline
greenairnews.comIATA has formed a new alliance of airlines and carbon market specialists to address a critical shortage of CORSIA-eligible carbon credits. The Supporting Alliance for CORSIA EEU Supply aims to unlock 225 to 250 million credits by spring 2027 by helping host countries authorize credits under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. Currently only 47 million tonnes of the 640 million potentially eligible credits meet requirements due to a lack of host country authorization. The alliance includes 16 airlines and over 32 entities. IATA estimates CORSIA could generate $4 to $5 billion in climate finance for the first phase from 2024 to 2026 and potentially $100 billion by 2035. Sylvera data shows demand for the first phase at 174.5 million tonnes, but supply bottlenecks and some airlines signaling non-compliance create uncertainty. The alliance will provide pro bono implementation assistance to countries to clear the authorization bottleneck.
