Airhive acquires Carbyon to combine solid-sorbent DAC tech and scale European carbon removal

UK-based direct air capture company Airhive has acquired Dutch firm Carbyon, merging their solid-sorbent DAC technology development. The combined company will operate under the Airhive brand with teams in the UK and Netherlands. Carbyon's former headquarters at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven will host early-stage R&D for next-generation DAC systems. Airhive will continue co-developing UnionDAC, a planned 60,000-tonne-per-year commercial DAC facility in Teesside, UK, targeting full operation by 2032. The company is also exploring carbon utilization projects, including a system with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners to produce low-carbon CO2 for beverages. The UK Climate Change Committee aims for eight million tonnes of annual CO2 removal via DAC by 2050.

The Coca-Cola partnership for low-carbon CO2 in beverages is a smart angle. Gives them a revenue stream while they work on the big removal plant. Food grade CO2 has a market.

True, but every ton of CO2 they capture and sell for beverage use is a ton that is not emitted elsewhere. It is a niche but it helps build operational experience before the big plant comes online.

60k tonnes per year is not huge in the grand scheme. UK target is 8 million tonnes by 2050. They need about 130 of these facilities. Wonder what the energy input per tonne looks like for their solid sorbent.

Energy input is the key question. Solid sorbent DAC usually requires heat for regeneration. If they can source low carbon heat from Teesside industrial processes, that changes the economics. Otherwise it is just an expensive way to move CO2 around.
