AIA's latest 2030 Commitment report covers 2025 building performance data from participating architecture firms. It shows 67% of whole-building projects were energy modeled, but reported energy savings declined because firms switched from 2003 CBECS baselines to firm-determined reference points that better reflect real conditions. Efficiency gains measured by predicted EUI have largely plateaued, which AIA reads as a sign that efficiency alone will not reach net zero by 2030. The program is now shifting from energy-only tracking to total carbon reporting. Planned updates include grid emissions data in the Design Data Exchange, a combined operational and embodied carbon metric, and better benchmarking tools. The report is useful for anyone tracking whether the design industry can move from efficiency gains to actual decarbonization before the 2030 deadline.
