AI's data center footprint is real, but the same tech is cutting curtailment and tracking emissions
enca.comAI is not just a new source of data center electricity demand. The same technology is already helping grid operators forecast solar and wind output, reduce curtailment, and track facility-level emissions through tools like Climate TRACE. The IEA estimates that broader AI deployment across transport, industry, and buildings could save 13.5 exajoules by 2035, roughly Indonesia's annual energy use. Weather forecasting is another clear win, with AI-based models cutting the time needed for major advances from years to months. None of this makes AI an automatic climate solution. Data center load is growing fast, and oil and gas companies have long used AI to find and extract more fossil fuels. COP31 in Turkey plans to push for climate-responsible AI, which will test whether the technology's climate benefits can outweigh its footprint. The practical question is not whether AI helps or hurts, but which uses get deployed at scale and which ones get left behind.
