AI method maps 10,000 CO2-to-fuel reactions and reveals overlooked pathways for methanol production
gasworld.comResearchers at the Indian Institute of Science used machine learning and quantum simulations to expand a reaction network for CO2 hydrogenation from 152 to 9,389 elementary reactions. The larger network predicted methanol and carbon monoxide as the main products, matching experimental observations, while the smaller network incorrectly pointed to formic acid. It also projected roughly 40 times higher CO2 conversion, though that figure is a model result, not a measured industrial outcome. The work highlights how incomplete reaction models can mislead catalyst design. It also found that hydrogen can transfer as an intact molecule during some steps, a detail that may help researchers identify better catalysts for producing methanol from captured CO2. The practical value depends on whether these pathways hold up in real reactors and whether the hydrogen used is produced with low-carbon power.
