Global data centers are projected to consume 945 terawatt-hours of electricity annually, nearly triple the combined use of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria. The report also estimates 9.3 trillion liters of water and over 14,500 square kilometers of land will be needed. The report emphasizes that AI's environmental cost goes beyond carbon emissions. While data centers already emit about 189 million metric tons of CO2 per year, the water and land demands are equally significant. The water footprint alone equals the basic annual needs of 1.3 billion people in Sub-Saharan Africa. Most of the energy use comes from inference, the continuous operation of AI systems after training, not the training itself. The findings highlight a growing tension between AI expansion and climate goals. As data center power demand climbs over 160% by 2030, according to Goldman Sachs, the pressure on grids and renewable energy supply will intensify. The report calls for proactive management to keep AI infrastructure within planetary limits.
