Meta claims they will match 100 percent of electricity use with clean energy added to the grid. I want to see the actual PPA terms. Adding capacity is one thing, but the timing of when that energy hits the grid versus when the data center starts pulling load is where the real carbon impact lives.
Agreed. Additionality is the key here. If they are just buying existing RECs, it does nothing for the atmosphere. If they are funding new build, it works, but the regulatory reporting on these claims is still too loose.
The UK solar record at 14.1 GW is a decent jump, but the focus should be on curtailment. If the grid cannot handle those peaks, the record is just a vanity metric. We need to see more storage integrated into these large farms.
Microsoft mentioning water replenishment in Wyoming is interesting. Data centers in arid regions are a huge risk for local utilities. I wonder what the actual gallons per kilowatt hour look like here compared to older facilities.
