AI and Machine Learning Expand CO2-to-Methanol Reaction Network by Thousands, IISc Study Finds
news.ssbcrack.comResearchers at the Indian Institute of Science used machine learning and quantum chemistry simulations to expand the known reaction network for CO2 hydrogenation on a copper catalyst. The network grew from 152 to 9,389 reactions, and the larger model predicted methanol and carbon monoxide as the main products. Predicted CO2 conversion jumped by roughly 40 times, bringing simulations much closer to experimental results. The work appears in Nature Communications. The study also identified a hydrogen transfer pathway where intact H2 molecules take part in the reaction, not just individual hydrogen atoms. That goes against the usual assumption in catalytic models and could guide the design of copper catalysts that favor methanol production. The same computational framework could be applied to other industrial reactions like nitrogen reduction or water splitting. This is a research-stage result, not a commercial breakthrough. It does not mean a CO2-to-fuel plant is imminent, but it gives catalyst developers a more complete map of the chemistry involved.
