Agrivoltaics and green urea: How solar, maize, and ethanol can cut India's fertiliser emissions
pv-magazine-india.comA new analysis from the Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) proposes co-locating agrivoltaics, maize farming, ethanol production, and urea manufacturing to reduce India's dependence on imported natural gas for fertiliser. The idea is to use solar power from agrivoltaics to run electrolysers for green hydrogen, then combine that with biogenic CO2 captured from ethanol fermentation to produce low-carbon urea. This would replace the fossil-based CO2 currently used in urea production and cut the sector's exposure to volatile global gas prices. The model relies on maize as a dual-purpose crop. It can be grown under solar panels for grain income and used as feedstock for ethanol. Each tonne of maize yields about 400 litres of ethanol, and the CO2 released during fermentation is high-purity biogenic CO2 that can be captured and fed directly into urea production. The authors argue that co-locating these facilities creates multiple revenue streams: ethanol sales under India's blending mandate, urea for a domestic market over 33 million tonnes per year, and captive solar power. India's fertiliser subsidy bill hit INR 1.71 lakh crore in 2024-25, so any model that cuts natural gas imports could have significant fiscal and emissions benefits.
