Afrox has entered a 10 year power purchase agreement with Discovery Green to supply its Kuilsriver air separation unit in Cape Town with renewable electricity. Starting in 2028, the deal will provide 28 GWh of annual energy sourced from a mix of wind and solar projects across South Africa. This transition is expected to cut Afrox's operational carbon emissions by approximately 25,000 tCO2e per year. The energy will be drawn from a diversified portfolio exceeding 700 MW, including the Overberg Wind Farm and the Tournee and Notsi solar farms.

The 2028 start date is the real detail here. That is a long lead time. I wonder if the interconnection for the expanded portfolio is already secured or if they are betting on grid upgrades happening by then.

Air separation units are energy hogs. Switching the source is a start, but I would be curious to see if they are also looking at efficiency upgrades for the plant itself to lower that 28 GWh requirement.
