AfriSam Funds Cleaner Cookstoves Through Carbon Offsets, Cutting 112,000 Tonnes of CO2 in South Africa
infrastructurenews.co.zaAfriSam, a South African construction materials company, has bought 112,000 tonnes of verified carbon offsets from The African Stove Company to help meet its 2025 carbon tax obligations. The offsets fund energy-efficient cookstoves for low-income households. According to the announcement, 27,695 households received stoves, reaching an estimated 116,319 people, while saving about 81,146 tonnes of firewood per year. The project replaces traditional open fires with Rocket Works Zama Zama stoves that use roughly 60% less wood and cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to five tonnes per household annually. AfriSam has also signed an offtake agreement covering offsets from 2026 to 2030, with a grassland restoration project planned next. The story is a concrete example of how South Africa's carbon tax can direct money into projects with measurable emissions and community benefits.
