AfriSam has launched Carbon Wise, a readymix concrete range in South Africa that quantifies the embodied carbon footprint of each mix. The company uses a measurement tool from the Cement and Concrete Institute of South Africa and local industry values to calculate emissions from cement, extenders, aggregates, admixtures, water, and plant operations. The range includes Rapid with an 18% carbon reduction, Enhanced with 28%, and Eco with 44%, all relative to an ordinary Portland cement reference mix. The initiative responds to green building specifications that increasingly require supplementary cementitious materials and recycled aggregates. AfriSam says the mixes maintain performance, citing a 60% SCM mix for the Main Reef Water Reservoir that met 28-day strength even though the spec allowed 56 days. The company is also developing a range with a 50% carbon reduction, giving specifiers a clearer basis for material selection as carbon tax and sustainability pressure grow.
