Africa's Carbon Market Needs Early-Stage Funding to Turn Credit Targets Into Real Projects
taarifa.rwAfrica's carbon market could generate 300 million credits a year by 2030, but early-stage projects are struggling to get financed. The Rwanda Green Fund's CEO made the point at the Carbon Markets Africa Summit in Kigali: developers need money for feasibility studies, emissions baselines, and verification systems before commercial investors will touch them. Without that preparation capital, most projects never reach the investment-ready stage. Rwanda has a head start. Its Article 6 framework is in place, and historical projects have already produced over 2.25 million credits, mostly from improved cookstoves. But the bigger opportunity is in forestry, agriculture, and energy, where the risk and cost of getting a project ready are much higher. The article is worth reading for anyone tracking carbon finance in Africa, because it names the real bottleneck: not a lack of demand, but a lack of money for project preparation.
