Africa Nature Impact Fund Launches to Raise $100M for Conservation and Carbon Projects
africasustainabilitymatters.comFinance Earth, FSD Africa and FSD Africa Investments have launched the Africa Nature Impact Fund, a platform aiming to raise $100 million for early-stage conservation and nature-based carbon projects across Africa. The fund plans an initial close of $20 million in 2027, with a cornerstone commitment of about $6.6 million from FSDAi. It targets protecting or restoring 4.5 million hectares and sequestering or avoiding over 100 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, though those figures are projections. The fund builds on FSD Africa's CAPE programme, which assessed 300 projects and built a pipeline of over 3.4 billion tonnes of potential CO2 impact. A key feature is community benefit sharing, with the fund aiming to direct about $450 million to host communities. How that money is calculated and distributed will determine whether the promised benefits actually materialize. The launch addresses a real gap: nature-based projects often struggle to get financing before they have reliable revenue. The fund's success depends on attracting more investors, building credible project pipelines, and ensuring transparent governance. It also aims to bring African financial institutions into the market so more ownership stays local.
