Aerogel fiber felts are lightweight, hydrophobic insulation materials used across three major sectors: industrial pipelines, building retrofits, and electric vehicle battery packs. In steam pipeline retrofits, they cut energy use by up to 75.7% and reduce carbon emissions by 11,000 tons over a decade. For buildings, a 6 mm aerogel layer in windows cut heating demand by 57% and raised winter balcony temperatures by 6.5 degrees C. In EV battery packs, aerogel felts act as firewalls between cells. A 3 mm layer reduced thermal barrier efficiency by nearly 300%, and 10 mm fully blocked thermal runaway propagation. The material's thin profile and fire resistance make it useful where space is tight and safety is critical.
