AEP and X-energy have signed a joint development agreement to study a 960 MW small modular reactor plant at the former Breed coal station in Sullivan County, Indiana. Amazon is backing the project through a funding agreement, with plans to use some of the carbon-free power for its data center expansion in the state. The plant would use up to twelve Xe-100 reactors, each rated at 80 MW. No SMR is operating commercially in the United States yet. The NRC is still reviewing X-energy's permit for a separate project at Dow's Texas chemical site. AEP says a final investment decision is still ahead. If built, the Indiana plant would repurpose a retired coal site and supply baseload power to the regional grid, while Amazon says it will cover the full costs without shifting them to other ratepayers.
