Adur and Worthing councils cut their carbon emissions by 54.25% between 2019/20 and 2025/26, with the biggest single reduction coming from the waste vehicle fleet after it moved from diesel to hydrotreated vegetable oil. Total emissions from electricity, gas and the fleet fell from 3,032 tonnes of CO2 equivalent to 1,387 tonnes over that period. The councils still face a major challenge meeting their 2030 carbon neutral target. Worthing Crematorium's gas fired cremators would need to be replaced with electric alternatives, a multi-million pound project that is not considered practically or financially feasible by the deadline. Council officers say some residual emissions will remain past 2030 and have floated offsetting as a possibility, but the report does not yet specify how that would work.
