ADM has announced its entry into the voluntary carbon removal market, leveraging its 800,000+ tonne annual carbon capture capacity at its Columbus, Nebraska corn processing complex. The biogenic CO2 from ethanol fermentation is purified, compressed, and transported to Tallgrass's Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub for permanent underground storage. The carbon removal credits are being certified by Puro.earth under its Geologically Stored Carbon methodology, with initial issuance expected by year-end. This move allows ADM to monetize its existing carbon management infrastructure while providing corporate buyers across technology, aviation, finance, and pharmaceuticals with verified, large-scale engineered carbon removals. The project highlights how agricultural processors can generate high-durability carbon credits at low marginal capture costs, building on ADM's decade-long experience with carbon capture and storage at its Decatur, Illinois hub.
