The Asian Development Bank has completed an assessment of Turkmenistan's voluntary carbon market potential. The review looks at how the country could generate and sell carbon credits from projects like methane capture, reforestation, and energy efficiency. Turkmenistan has large natural gas reserves and significant methane leakage, so the potential for crediting is real if monitoring and verification can be set up properly. For carbon market watchers, this is another sign that Central Asian governments are starting to explore carbon finance as a revenue stream. The ADB has been running similar assessments in Georgia and Kyrgyzstan. The key question is whether Turkmenistan can build the institutional framework to actually issue and verify credits. Without independent validation, voluntary market buyers will stay cautious.
