ADB Approves $57.4 Million for Sri Lanka Rooftop Solar Expansion with Virtual Net Metering
devdiscourse.comThe Asian Development Bank approved a $57.4 million financing package to expand rooftop solar in Sri Lanka. The package includes a $35 million concessional loan and $21.9 million in grants from the European Union and Japan. The project will install about 25 MWp of rooftop solar capacity and introduce a utility-led virtual net metering model, allowing households and businesses without suitable roof space to share solar energy credits. The project will be implemented by two state-owned utilities, Electricity Distribution Lanka and Lanka Electricity Company. It also includes modernizing distribution grids to handle more distributed renewable energy, a social compensation mechanism for MSMEs and community organizations, and a training facility to build green skills and increase women's participation in the clean energy sector. ADB says the project supports Sri Lanka's transition to cleaner energy while improving affordability and reducing emissions.
